My family and I at the Iowa game!

My family and I are enjoying ourselves at an Iowa Game!

Hello everyone! And welcome to my thankful article. There are so many things and people that I am thankful for, I don’t even know where to start. One main thing I am thankful for would have to be this dance studio. There are tons of memories I have made with this amazing studio and team. And I can’t wait to make many more.

Being a dance instructor at the CR Spirits is the best job you could ask for. I get to be around fun young girls that get so excited to come to dance class. Every Monday I get to see my student’s faces and to see their expression when they walk in the dance room is priceless. I am very thankful to be able to have this position. I get to have a bunch of little girls look up to me and I learn so much about them. As an instructor I get to know my students and watch them grow up. I love watching them become confident and positive young girls that are great dancers and will soon move up to the Li’l Spirits.

Picture with the family. Love you guys!

My mom and dad!

As most parents and students in the studio know I am the owner’s daughter. My mom and I have a great relationship. We work together very well and I think it is pretty cool to say we dance on the same dance team. But….I don’t think she knows how must I appreciate her…Tiffany (mom) is such a great role model in my life. She has been the best mom and I would definitely give her an award for that. Tiffany (mom) deserves to be awarded something…and not only for being a great mom and great role-model, but for having an awesome dance team and studio that she is able to call hers. Her studio is nothing like any other studio in Cedar Rapids, IA. This studio is not just about dancing and showing off…it is about building up your confidence…showing how important you are and how life is such a great thing. This studio makes you open up and I don’t know any other studio out there that does that. Tiffany (mom) you really are a great person and I love you sooo much!! I don’t know who I would be or where I would be if I didn’t have you. Someday we are going to be able to share your story to the world because everyone deserves to hear it. I can truly say I want to be just like you! I love you!

The CR Spirits

Tiffany, Amy & Rachel with some BIG SMILES in California!

I am thankful for many things in my life. If I had to pick one thing that has changed or impacted my life the most it would have to be being a part of the best dance studio in Cedar Rapids, Iowa.  As a child I was a CR Junior Spirit.  It changed my whole life.  I was a bigger girl and got made fun of a lot at school. Once I joined CR Spirits I lost weight, gained a ton of confidence and made a ton of really great friends.  The coolest thing about that was I actually found a group of girls that I actually fit in with!

CR Spirits Dance Studio

Amy with the CR Junior Spirits showing LOVE!

We were all there for one reason and one reason only…just to dance!  I stayed in the dance studio until I was seventeen.  That’s when you have to take a break before you can try out for the CR Spirits Professional Dance Team.  You can try out when you are eighteen or have graduated from high school.  It’s a good amount of time for you to find yourself.

The CR Spirits

Amy getting ready to perform with the Professional Dance Team!

I tried out as soon as I could in 2004.  WOW!  It was hard. I loved to dance but the CR Spirits Professional Dance Team is a lot harder than it looks.  I struggled a lot.  I almost got cut. I had to practice seven days a week for hours.  I wanted to be a part of the best dance team in Iowa really bad.

I made it. The first year was really tough. Tiffany is so inspiring.  She has a gift. She touches so many girls and women in so many ways and has no idea.  Every time I make a decision I think of her and wonder what she would do in my situation.  She always says “make good decisions, they determine who you are”.  Her voice always runs through my head.

CR Spirits Dance Studio's Prom

Spirit Family!

I hope I impact the Junior Spirits the same way being in the dance studio has impacted me.  I teach the Juniors ages 13-17.  What a group of young ladies!  They can come to me with anything they are having a problem with and I am there to listen and give the best advice I can. These girls are just starting to form their lives and I get to be a huge part of it.  They take in every word I say.

CR Junior Spirits

Amy with her Junior Spirits!

For example, I was abused and hospitalized one year ago.  Did you know one out of every four women is abused?  I talked to the girls about abuse.  It was amazing to see how many girls were going through abuse.  Weather it be sexually, physically, emotionally or mentally they all opened up.  Dancing that night took all that hurt away.  Isn’t that a miracle? When we are there in the dance room nobody thinks of anything else but dance.  It is the coolest thing that all these girls from all different schools come together for one thing… dance.  It’s their passion. CR Spirits Dance studio is more than just a studio.  No matter how hard life is we all get through it.  We are all just a bunch of women and girls dancing our way through life.

The CR Li'l Spirits

Kaitlin with her Li'l Spirits before a Performance!

In the middle of my 9th year on the dance team, I have to say that my place on the CR Spirits Professional Dance Team has played an enormous role in my life.  I have been on this team longer than my college career, longer than any job I have held, and only 6 months less than I’ve been with my husband!  These women are my friends, and more importantly my family!  They are who I turn to when I need strength and support, and who I go to when I need advice or to just let off some steam.  As we have said many times before, over time, this team becomes more than just a group of girls you practice and perform with – this team becomes a part of who you are as an individual.  For me, it was a hobby that turned into a passion, which turned into a fundamental part of my life.  For that, I am so thankful for my team and studio… it really is unlike any other.

As a member on the Professional Team, in March of 2010 I was honored to be asked to share my dance skills and become the Li’ls Coach.  My role as a coach in our studio is the icing on the cake for my love of dance.  This has been my opportunity to take the motivating atmosphere the Professional Team provides, accompanied with the same morals, values and support, and teach them to my students through dance, just as I experienced it!  I am so privileged!

The CR Spirits in Cedar Rapids

Kaitlin with her Li'l Spirits!

I can’t even convey how rewarding it is to see a girl come into the Li’ls class at age 10, leave for Juniors at age 13 a completely different dancer!  And I get to be a huge part of that!  We make the learning experience fun, with no pressure, add some laughter and flare, and this truly brings out confidence in each girl.  I get so excited when we have new students, whether they’re girls who have tried other studios or girls who have never been in dance before.  Every girl in our room has been in those shoes and I guarantee they can see that our studio is unique this way!  When they look in the mirror and see themselves do the dance not as an individual anymore, but as a team, this is when we really begin to shine.  And I am so lucky to be able to help pull that confidence out of them!

The positivity and support our studio provides to our students really is identical to that of the Professional Team, and I am so fortunate to be one of the few that can be a part of both sides.  I am thankful for Tiffany, my coach and employer who started the team and studio.  Her style of teaching and business management is truly alluring. I am thankful for the CR Spirits Professional Team who built my confidence, provided me support and became the best friends a girl could ask for!  And I am especially thankful for my students and their families who allow me to share with them the wonderful experience our studio provides!

Let’s start with Itty-Bitty Instructor, Shannon!
The CR Spirits Staff

Shannon enjoying the Iowa weather!

I have been a part of the CR Spirits Professional Dance Team and Studio since 1994.  I was one of the original pro team members.  I tried out because of Tiffany’s personality.  I could see her spirit and passion about her dream; I believed in her vision of the best dance team in Cedar Rapids and I love being a part of the best!  I am thankful for being a part of a dance studio the focuses on building a team, influencing our future citizens, and family.

CR Spirits Staff and Family

Shannon with her loving family.

Team building at the CR Spirits is as simple as a speech from Tiffany and as extravagant to traveling.  I LOVE to travel and had the opportunity to be an instructor for the CR AZ Spirits! I am sure some of you read that as crazy and those of you who know me says that is Shannon for sure.  But really the CR like “see our”… get it CR Spirit and CR AZ (Arizona) Spirit.  Arizona could definitely CR Spirit.

I love girl power.  Teaching dance to our team members is only a small part of the CR Spirits Professional Dance Team and Studio’s responsibility.  Confidence, being comfortable in your own skin, and manners are the biggest.  Yes…. Manners and it shows when we perform in Cedar Rapids and surrounding areas.  I love the compliments from venues that tell us our dance team is well behaved.  As an instructor for the young dance team members I keep smiling in tough times and stay active.

Family is getting through the good, bad, and ugly.  The CR Spirits Dance Team and Studio has done that for number of dance team members over the past 19 years.   It is not all about the dancing… it is all that comes with it!

Libby actually teaches our Mom & Me Spirits but is also a Itty-Bitty Instructor too!

“In learning you will teach, and in teaching you will learn.” This is a quote by Phil Collins that I find quite true. I have learned so much this year from teaching at the CR Spirits Dance Studio in Cedar Rapids, Iowa. It is such a wonderful feeling to be able say I am a staff member at the CR Spirits Dance Studio.

CR Spirits Dance Stuido

Libby & Crystal getting ready for a Spirit Birthday Party!

I haven’t been an instructor for quite a year yet, but I have tons of things to be thankful for. First off, I am so very thankful for Tiffany Kuehl for asking me to be a part of the CR Spirit Studio Staff as an Itty-Bitty instructor. Without her, none of this would be possible. She gives us all so much and expects nothing in return. She is truly gifted, selfless, and an all around wonderful woman.

Secondly, I am thankful for all of the wonderful women I get to work with. The CR Spirits Studio Staff means the world to me. I may not see them every day, but when we see each other it is like we haven’t missed a beat. They are always there to brighten your smile or lift your mood. I have made some very strong friendships within this last year and it has only made my life better.

Spirit Halloween Parties

Crystal & Libby getting ready for Studio Halloween Parties!

Another thing I am most thankful for are the students at the CR Spirits Studio. Getting to see their bright smiles every week is an absolute joy. They are so excited to continue learning routines and have some fun. Being able to be a part of helping them learn and perfect their dance ability is an honor. I am so very thankful that the parents bring their children into the Spirits studio. Without the students I wouldn’t get to do what I love.

The Itty-Bitty Spirits

Lastly, I would like to thank all of your for taking the time to read this. I think I can safely say we are ALL thankful for our support team. You guys are great. Whether you bring your children into the CR Spirit Studio or come watch us perform in Cedar Rapids, IA or the surrounding areas, we cherish you all. Your praise and support is amazing. Help us spread the word about the CR Spirits by “liking” us on Facebook, following us on Twitter, or bringing friends and family out to watch us perform. I hope you all have a wonderful holiday season, and hope to see you at the studio or at a performance soon!

On New Year’s you find yourself thinking about all of what the year ahead might have to offer.  You try to put aside your frustrations of goals that didn’t come to flourishion this year and imagine the possibilities that might lie ahead.  Some people make resolutions.  Some people know that they’ll never see a resolution through so they merely dream about what this next year of their life will look like.  I started out 2012 believing that I finally had life pretty figured out.  I was happy (or at least I thought so), on a solid career path, and about to finish my Master’s degree.  I thought 2012 was going to be the easiest year I would have in quite some time.  Boy, was I ever wrong!  2012 has brought many changes my way.  At first I thought they were the worst possible changes that could ever happen to me; however, thanks to the amazing supports in my life, including the wonderful, strong women of the CR Spirits Dance Studio, I can now say that 2012, although a difficult year emotionally, may have been the greatest year as far as my future is concerned.
The CR Spirits

Heather with Tiffany and Shannon getting the Spirits Studio ready for a Show!

You see, CR Spirits is more than just a dance studio.  It is a Mecca for strong, confident, powerful women.  It is a place where you can come to feel empowered.  To learn the stories of other confident women and what they have aspired to accomplish.  It is for these reasons that I have worked for the best dance studio in Cedar Rapids for more than 11 years.  I began working for Tiffany Kuehl, the owner of CR Spirits Professional Dance Team and Studio, when I was 16-years-old.  She didn’t know me very well, but she saw something in me. She saw a girl who was very unsure of herself, with low confidence and self-esteem; however, she also saw ambition and strength.  After becoming my boss, she soon became more.  Now she is not only one of my greatest mentors, she is my confidant and dear friend.  The lessons I have learned from Tiffany, and the women of CR Spirits, has helped me to become the woman I am today.

CR Spirits Staff

Spirit Staff

Now, as 2013 inches closer, I find myself no longer sad by the events of 2012.  I see myself as having nothing but amazing opportunities ahead.  I am discovering the blessings that my “misfortune” has afforded me and couldn’t be more excited to feel free and be a role model for other women going through a personal struggle.  I have developed goals and resolutions that I know I will accomplish because I am no longer unsure of myself.  With the help of the amazing women of CR Spirits Dance Studio, and Tiffany Kuehl, I have learned that life is indeed a journey and while on that journey you should take time to dance!

The CR Spirits Dance Studio is filled with smart, young, and talented girls that are between the ages of 4 and 17. Each dance group practices once a week for an hour. During the class times we teach new dances, confidence, and we know how to have a good time. Each group has something different about them.

The Itty-Bitty Spirits (ages 4-6) here in Cedar Rapids are full of energy and they are a ton of fun to watch. On stage and in class they show off their personality. Then we have the Tiny Spirits (ages 7-9) and they are at an age where they want to tell you everything about what is in their mind and they are very interested in learning something new everyday. Our Li’l Spirits (ages 10-12) start getting attitude and once they get on stage they love to show off how great of dancer they are. Then we have our CR Junior Spirits (ages 13-17) when you watch them dance our audience can tell that they love what they do. They are growing up and becoming confident young women that will soon be on their own and making decisions on their own. They grow up so fast!

We live in a world that is obsessed with the best. “What’s the best restaurant in town? Where’s the best shopping? What’s the best airline to fly?”

So, I think it’s only natural that when parents are looking for a dance studio they want the best for their child.

For some things, it’s easy to figure out why they are the best. For restaurants it’s because the food at one tastes better than the other. For clothing stores it’s because this one has a greater selection and is more in tune with today’s fashions.

But how do you determine the best dance studio?

Is it education? I mean if you have a degree in dance does that automatically make your studio the best above all the rest? I’m thinking probably not. Does having a business degree from Harvard guarantee that you’ll be a success in business? Of course it doesn’t. Steve Jobs dropped out of college because he found it boring. He went on to found Apple, one of the biggest companies in the world.
To me, dance isn’t something you learn from cracking a book in a classroom or learning dance theory. It’s something that comes from inside of you. It’s a way of expressing your thoughts and emotions into motions. If you don’t have the ability to translate those thoughts and motions fluidly, then no amount of studying is going to change that. So I don’t think education is really helpful when ranking a dance studio.

Itty-Bitty Spirit!

Itty-Bitty Spirit performing on stage at the Iowa State Fair, in Des Monies, IA.

What about styles of dance?

You’re not “really” a dance studio unless you teach ballet and tap. That’s kind of like saying P!nk isn’t a singer because she doesn’t sing opera.

Wikipedia defines dance as “A type of art that generally involves movement of the body, usually rhythmic and to music, performed in many different cultures and used as a form of expression, social interaction and exercise.”
I must have missed the part where it talked about dance being restricted solely to tap or ballet.
Dance is all about expressing what is inside of the dancer, you can’t just stuff it into a one size fits all mold.

Look around you. We drive different cars, like different foods, enjoy different music. We are blessed with diversity. That’s what makes the world an interesting place to live in. So I don’t think you can say that a style of dance makes one dance studio better than another.

Well, it has to be awards then right?

You’ve seen it on the websites…”Winner of the ( fill in the blank here ) award five years in a row!!” Surely that has to be how you know this dance studio is the best right? Well, if that’s your only criteria then you’d be right.

Sure it’s great to win awards. We all love to be recognized for our achievements. But what does it mean? The CR Spirits were nominated and won KCRG’s A-List category for best dance studio so we must be the best right? Again, I don’t think that’s the deciding factor for determining the best. Everything is subjective.
I loved this film but you hated it. You like this song but I’d rather visit the dentist than listen to that. That’s why I’m shocked that we still have movie critics. Just because they love a film doesn’t mean that I’m going to love it.

Li'l Spirit!
Li’l Spirit posing at the Iowa State Fair!

The same thing goes for awards and competitions. On this day with these judges, these were the results. On a different day with different judges maybe the results would be different. Maybe not.

So if it’s not about education or style or even awards then how do you determine the best dance studio in town? I think one of my most important criteria is the one that your child enjoys the most.

Is learning things like discipline, coordination and social skills important? Well sure they are. But isn’t it even more important that your daughter is having fun while learning all those things? If she’s not then why are you spending your money and wasting her time?

If I was new in town and I wanted to find a studio for my daughters to take dance lessons, the first question I’d have after I visited a studio with them would be “Did you have fun?”

Hello world! Today is Universal Children’s Day and YES there is such a day! The reason for this “Holiday” would be because the General Assembly recommended that all countries institute a Universal Children’s Day. To observe as a day of worldwide fraternity and understanding between children. It recommended that the Day was to be observed also as a day of activity devoted to promoting the ideals and objectives of the Charter and the welfare of the children of the world. November 20th is the special date for this day because is marks the day on which the Assembly adopted the Declaration of the Rights of the Child in 1959 and also the Convention on the Rights of the Child in 1989. The adoption of the Convention on the Rights of the Child and the creation of Universal Children’s Day reflects the growing recognition that children are important and valued members of society, now and in the future. Universal Children’s Day celebrates children just for being themselves. It reminds us that children need love and respect to grow to their full potential. It is a day to listen to children, to marvel at their uniqueness and all they have to offer.

Being a child isn’t always easy, especially if they aren’t given what they need to help them succeed in life. “We were all children once and we all share the desire for the well-being of our children, which has always been and will continue to be the most universally cherished aspiration of humankind.”

They may seem like a pain, but their just learning how to play a very complicated game; that many, or most adults have trouble play. After all, without kids, there wouldn’t be a Mother’s Day or a Father’s Day.
